The Good, The Bard and the Ugly

Okay, so I haven't written for nearly 6 months. So what?! Don't be pulling that guilt trip on me. I refuse to be manipulated like that.

Anyway, very proud to announce the launch of a brand new short comedy film, written and starring self, comedy chum Nick Swift, and comedy chum Andrew McCaldon.

Britain“s disenfranchised youth is finding solace in renaissance music, and solidarity in the uniform of tights and tunics.

But is this growing trend simply a harmless fad, or a grave social nuisance?

The Lute & The Fury tackles the real issues behind Minstrelry, following the real life story of would-be bard, Jason Hunter.

Visit www.luteandfury.co.uk to view the film and find out more.

And if you like it, tell all your friends. Particularly if they happen to be commissioning editor for BBC Light Entertainment.

Thanks

In The Navy

Well.

It's been a while since that lastentry. I've been an over-occupied rabbit.

Last Friday saw me filming some of my songs for a new ITV sketch show, 'Comedy Cuts', which airs in the new year.

It's being produced and directed by a couple of friends of mine (yes, nepotism in TV is rife, but I'm not proud: I'll take as many helping hands as people feel like thrusting at me) Ro and Matt.

I think they'd done most of the filming when they realised that they'd like a bit more musical content, and they had some budget to play with, so they dressed me up in a leary Hawaiian shirt, shorts, sandals and a straw hat, and stuffed me into a hammock in various unlikely locations around Central London.

My personal highlight was filming 'Why do people think I'm gay?' on the deck of HMS Belfast. Apparently one of the tourists leant over to one of the sailors during the filming and said 'What's going on then? Are they filming anyone famous?'
'Nah. Just some gay bloke' came the reply.

Best of all though, was walking back up the gangway on the way to the car, and hearing the burly seaman whistling my camp tune as he swabbed the deck.

More incongruous than the locations though, was the weather. With temperatures of less than ten degrees, and sporadic drizzle, my flimsy costume left me shivering all day, despite the crew's diligent efforts to keep my core temperature up with coats and cups of tea. I froze me proverbials off.

Where better then, to spend the weekend, than a cold disused church in Tring.
The other members of Belcanto had got there at lunchtime on Friday, set up all the gear, and recorded 2 tracks by the time I got there on Friday evening.

The church was absolutely gorgeous - properly rural, slightly crumbling, and with great acoustics.

The tracks sound absolutely fantastic (Tim, the engineer, has worked with loads of major recording artists, including Prince, or whatever hieroglyphic he now goes by).

It was therefore no small compliment when he said how professional we sounded. He was particularly impressed with the wife's sultry vocal tone and impeccable intonation (so was I, to be perfectly honest), and suggested that she had a future as a pro.

I hope she takes his advice to heart. I know that nothing would make her happier.

The album (provisionally titled 'Broken Glass' after three of our cars got broken into during the recording!) should be ready early in the new year. Watch this space for more details.

A Mitch in time...

Well, that nice Mitch Benn was kind enough to play my "Text Song" on his BBC7 show, the slightly prosaically (or possibly post-post-modernly) titled "Mitch Benn Music Show".

The show aired at 08h30 on Wed 25th, so I was able to listen in whilst eating porridge in my pants (I should really start using a bowl, ho ho).

Mitch was very complimentary about me, and flattered to read on my website that my Dad had described my act as "a bit like Mitch Benn, but not as good" (a paraphrase of something my poor Dad once said which came out wrong, much to his chagrin, and my amusement).

The ultimate compliment, though, was that I feature on Mitch's iTunes "funny stuff" playlist, between Peter Cook and Peter Sellers (which, although a purely alphabetical ranking, is still the highest 21st century accolade).

If you're reading this before Tuesday 31st October 2006, you can hear the show at BBC7's "listen again" page:

If not, try my MySpace page:

Cheers Mitch, and hope to meet you one day!

Big Jim's Trims

On Ealing High Street, there's a hairdressers called "Big Jim's Trims", presumably named after the proprietor, Big Jim.

I'm glad he's not running a brothel.

Brut Farce

Oh my god. People still wear Brut. I was getting onto a train at Hammersmith last night, when I got a whiff of the legendary fragrance wafting from the neck of some (presumably, unless gender boundaries have been completely eroded) fella.
Instantly, I was right back in my teenage bedroom: posters of big-titted pop bimbo Sabrina staring down at me from the walls; spots blossoming on my greasy little chin; and an arsenal of Brut products lined up on my shelf: roll-on, spray, aftershave, shower gel: Christ, if they'd made Brut flavoured toothpaste, I'd have used it.
I still didn't ever get to cop off with Sarah Reeves, despite dowsing myself with the stuff.
Come to think of it, I want my money back!

As If By Magic, Mr Benn Appeared

Well, I've been too hot and sweaty to update my blog for about 6 weeks. And I'm sure my millions of readers will have been very disappointed.

Anyway, I've just had a very exciting email from a far flung and officious-sounding bit of the BBC (Entertainment Copyright), saying that The Mitch Benn Music Show would like to use my Text Song on BBC7 October 25th.

I had to think about that one for a long while.

About three seconds.

The series starts on 11th October, and airs at 08h30 and 22h00.

Visit the BBC7 website or Mitch Benn's website for more details.

Don't forget, The Text Song is from my New Album, "Hobbledehoy", available from my website. Click here for more details.
